EndoTech® Endoscopic Treatment for Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture is a condition that involves abnormal growth of tissue over the palm, in the flexible area of the skin near the base joints of the fingers. This abnormal connective tissue causes nodules or cords to form, and can eventually cause the finger to contract. As the disease progresses, the contracture makes it impossible to extend the fingers. Routine activities such as washing dishes and shaking hands become difficult or impossible.

In the past, traditional surgical techniques intended to treat Dupuytren’s Contracture generally required a large, open incision which may lead to painful prolonged recovery and scarring. Fortunately, pioneering hand surgeon Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute has developed a minimally-invasive technique that not only provides complete relief of the symptoms associated with Dupuytren’s Contracture, it also is performed endoscopically.

The new EndoTech® Endoscopic Dupuytren Release is the only endoscopic treatment available for dupuytren’s contracture. This advancement provides a minimally-invasive approach requires only one or two tiny incisions of less than 1 centimeter in diameter. These procedures have been so well tolerated that in many cases, they can be performed using local anesthesia -eliminating the need for more advanced anesthesia and saving money for patients.

Dr. Fitzmaurice has also incorporated other state-of-the-art additions to his unique treatment, including the use of stem cells. This optional component can further improve outcomes by reducing the occurrence of scar tissue and decreasing healing time. Interceed® adhesion barrior is also available for Dupuytren’s procedures. This material can significantly reduce the chance of recurrence, and provides a softer and less-painful scar.
